In April 2003, I accompanied my friend Coty Dolores Miranda to the central highlands of Mexico to visit her father’s birthplace, her first such trip. Her primo (cousin) Octavio Miranda and her tia (aunt) Amalia still run the familia Miranda tienda (store) "La Constancia" that celebrates it’s 80th anniversary in 2004.

Built in a colonial Spanish architectural style, it sits on the plaza of Paracho in the state of Michoacan, a mountain village at 7,000 feet known worldwide as the guitar making capital of Mexico. The area is home to the indigenous Purepecha Indians. And, as in much of Mexico, ancient and modern meld here.

As depicted in this painting, local indigenous and Mexican residents entertain their young children on the electric buzzing and rocking coin-operated kiddy rides outside "La Constancia" while others sell their fresh baked goods and handmade pottery, woodworks and woven art on the sidewalks surrounding the square.

The petite Tia Amelia Miranda Bravo can be seen behind the counter, a usual stance shared 12 hours daily by this octogenerian and her 40-year-old son.

Giclee prints will be available. Email for sizes, prices and publication dates. The original hangs in our home in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
