SAN PEDRO, California (October 17, 2006)
Jim Gladson, President of Los Angeles Maritime Institute, and Alice Robinson have invited me to stay aboard one of the twin Brigantines to listen and be a part of the reunion of sailors of the Yankee’s circumnavigations. This reunion will take place in mid November in Los Angeles harbor. Both the Brigantines and shipmates will then journey on to Catalina Island for a multiday voyage.
I will do some drawings as the guests speak and take notes while their tales unfold. I am honored to be in company of such a few sailors who did the much admired and historic adventures so well illustrated by the National Geographic Society.
I understand that Lydia Edes will present some of her remembrances as told in her book “Yankee’s Wander World”.
BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES, Mexico (May 1, 2006)

My webmaster Jerry King and I are traveling on the last leg of an overland trip into the Sea of Cortez. We left in early April for the purpose of exploring the plants, rocks, tidepool life and shoreline characteristics of this beautiful peninsula. |
I am planning to use these background drawings to illustrate John Steinbeck's book "Log of the Sea of Cortez".
"My pen hand quivering with thoughts and my imagination excited in the presence of this unimaginable desert, I was filled with its strange fauna and flora which changes so dramatically from place to place and season to season."
Thomas Steinbeck, John's son, had presented to me the idea of an illustrated version of his father's book a few years back. He had his studio already adorned in my pen and ink drawings and he made it clear to me that that medium was my medium and was what would make an illustrated version of the book publish worthy. There will be more trips in the fall and next spring when the weather will be kinder.
I am anticipating that my images in ink will number in the dozens as my rereading of the "The Log from the Sea of Cortez" and the experience of visiting places opens up new inspirations.
BAJA CALIFORNIA (April 15, 2006)
"As this short note is being written, Jerry King and I are packing his Jeep to set off down the Baja Peninsula to work on a set of drawings and oil paintings that will chronicle the 1940 expedition of John Steinbeck and the noted marine biologist Ed Rickets, and their crew, aboard the "Western Flyer". Their journey produced John Steinbeck's book, "Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research" and much research for the noted marine biologist Ed Rickets."
"The drawings and oil paintings that I produce on this trip will provide the artwork for a new edition of "The Log from the Sea of Cortez".
BAJA CALIFORNIA (June 18, 2005)
"During the period from the Fall of 2004 to the Summer of 2005, I have been producing some oil paintings that have been really fun to complete. I am now offering these for sale. Please take a look at this part of the Mexico Collection. Click here to see my newest work from Mexico.
ENSENADA (June 5, 2005)
"We are already planning a fall of 2005 exhibit of my work at the Joanna Jones Gallery in Cantamar. I am constantly amazed at the fine job Joanna has done assembling a worthy group of talented artists that actively participate in the Gallery shows. We are very excited at the welcome that local people and artists have given her and her Gallery."
"Later this summer, the Vendimia Celebration will offer more opportunities for my new works to be shown."
"As an example of what goes on at the Gallery, friends and collectors from Mexico and the United States came Saturday May 28th to view the new colorful oil paintings and watercolors of Baja California. Afterhours, the artists and gallery owners from Rosarito joined Joanna and I with tequila in hands, singing and dancing into the morning hours. Truly, a group of people that love life. I am real happy to be part of this community!"
Peace, Scott
